Joseph Pilates (Puh – La – Teez)

Joseph H. Pilates developed this unique and effective series of exercises and movements over 90 years ago in order to battle rickets, asthma and a frail body. Joseph served as a nurse in World War II, and began attaching springs and pulleys to his patients’ hospital beds to aid in rehabilitation. During his lifetime, he worked with an unlimited scope of clients over many years utilizing these specialized apparatus. These were later streamlined and modified to create what we now use for the pilates method today. The Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair are among the several types of innovative equipment Joseph developed.

About Pilates Training

​

The Pilates method of conditioning has evolved quite a bit since the 1920’s. But the essential fundamentals of what make this method unique remains. The Pilates method focuses on attention to detail, no matter which series of exercises one performs. Proper posture, good physical alignment, core stabilization, refined mental focus, a balance of strength and flexibility, grace and fluidity are among the many elements which this workout demands and delivers.

The Pilates method is user friendly workout for every type of athlete, from the serene to extreme. Learning and applying this technique will add new levels of awareness, longevity, and promote total body balance. The Pilates workout is also an extremely beneficial tool for physical therapy and rehabilitation, as it is a non-impact exercise.
