Joseph Pilates  (puh-la-teez)
Joseph H. Pilates developed this unique and effective series of exercises and movements over 90 years ago in order to battle rickets,
asthma and a frail body.  Joseph served as a nurse in World War II, and began attaching springs and pulleys to his patients’ hospital
beds to aid in rehabilitation. During his lifetime, he worked with an unlimited scope of clients over many years utilizing these
specialized apparatus.  These were later streamlined and modified to create what we now use for the pilates method today. The
Reformer, Cadillac, and Wunda Chair are among the several types of innovative equipment Joseph developed.
What is Pilates Training?
The Pilates method of conditioning has evolved quite a bit since the 1920’s.  But the essential fundamentals of what make this
method unique remains.  The Pilates method focuses on attention to detail, no matter which series of exercises one performs
.
Posture, alignment, core stabilization, mental focus, a balance of strength and flexibility, grace and fluidity are among the many
elements which this workout demands and delivers.
It is user friendly for every type of athlete, from the serene to extreme.  The Pilates workout is also an extremely beneficial tool for
physical therapy and rehabilitation, as it is a non-impact exercise.
“If at the age of thirty you are stiff and out of shape, then you are old.  If at 60 you are supple and strong, then you are young.”  JH

“In 10 workouts, you feel different, in 20 you look different, in 30 you’ll have a whole new body.”   JH Pilates

About Yoga
Yoga: unification of mind, body, spirit.  That is the most basic definition of yoga, yet it is the physical journey towards such a goal which
is seemingly the more familiar description.  Hatha Yoga, an umbrella term for several different types of yoga asana practice, is the
practice of breathing exercises (pranayama) and physical postures (asanas) in order to achieve union with body, mind, spirit, soul,
and meditation.  The physicality of yoga is most often the initial attraction; yielding results such as an incredibly strong and flexible
body, with enhanced levels of balance and control.  This physical aspect, however, is just the doorway to a much richer path.
A regular practice will strengthen one’s spirit and mind; cultivating love, patience, and self acceptance while giving us the instruments
to remain peaceful in our often stressful environments.  Its lessons go far beyond the yoga mat.  Its adaptations can far beyond
simple asanas, as well.  At The Pilates Room and Yoga Lounge, we like to encourage students to turn their space on the mat into a
playground, their practice into expression.  With meditation in motion and expressive spirituality, one’s yoga practice becomes much
more than just a form of exercise.
